A Gentle Start to the New Year: Why I’m Choosing to Slow Down
Cherith Harrison2026-01-13T16:28:58+00:00Taking a fresh approach: a gentle start to the New Year
January has a certain quietness to it.
The decorations are put away, the days are still short, and everything feels a little softer and slower.
The decorations are put away, the days are still short, and everything feels a little softer and slower.
This year, I love seeing more people and businesses talk about starting the New Year slowly instead of rushing into big plans. More of us are letting ourselves pause, breathe, and ease into the months ahead.
Why January doesn’t have to be loud
For years, January has been seen as a time for nonstop work, new routines, big plans, and busy schedules. But nature doesn’t work that way, and most people don’t either.
Outside, everything is resting. Trees are bare, and wildlife is saving energy. Nothing is rushing, but everything is quietly preparing for what’s next. I find that comforting.
Planning and pausing can happen at the same time
I’ll admit it, I love planning. I enjoy looking back at the past year, acknowledging what’s working and what’s not, and gently sketching out ideas for the months ahead. It helps me feel grounded.
But that doesn’t mean I’m ready, or even want, to jump into action as soon as January begins.
Taking things slow at the start of the year gives you space to:
- Re-evaluate without stress
- Make thoughtful decisions rather than reactive ones
- Let ideas develop before deciding on them
For me, it’s about being intentional, not intense.
Easing back into work, gently
If you’re easing back into work, whether it’s creative or not, here are a few gentle, manageable ways to start at your own pace:
1. Start the day doing something that inspires you
Before you start your to-do list or begin creating one, spend a little time doing something that makes you happy. Whether it’s going for a walk, curling up with a book, or people-watching from a cosy cafe window (my personal favourite), you’ll start the day in a better frame of mind.
2. Update and refresh your space
Resetting isn’t always about doing more; it can be changing what’s around you.
A new cushion cover, wall art, or even just rearranging things can change how a room feels and how your mind feels.

3. Start Small
Instead of setting big goals, try gentle intentions like these:
- One creative task a day
- Short planning sessions rather than a full overhaul
- Making time for rest alongside work
These are small steps, but they still help you move forward. Doing what I do (and being who I am!), I try to spend at least 15 minutes each day having a bit of creative play. This could take the form of creative journaling, sketchbook work, or plain old doodling. Something that is just for me, not for work, and without a commercial aspect.
Creating calm surroundings for a calm start
Our home and work environment matters more than we often realise, especially at this time of year when most of our time is spent indoors.
I design my products with exactly this in mind: to create pieces that bring calm, a connection to nature, and a little joy into everyday life.
This can take the form of a wildlife-inspired mug for a relaxing cuppa, gentle wall art or a soothing candle.
Something that feels familiar, is comforting and quietly uplifting.

Let this be your permission to slip
You don’t have to have everything figured out.
You don’t have to rush into making big plans and strategising.
You’re allowed to pause, reflect, and move forward at your own pace. Nature never rushes, and yet everything still gets done. Here’s to a calm and thoughtful start to the year ahead.
